As I promised you in the last post, I will explain you how to start your theme design according to the draft you made. I normally use Adobe Photoshop for the design. I assume that you have a good knowledge about Photoshop.
The first thing you must do is creating a new file, selecting the size and resolution. Once you have done it, the next thing you must do is putting guide lines on the design according to the measurements you have marked in the draft. I have shown above the draft I made to design the current theme of this blog. It looks little messy
but I think you can get an idea about that. This design is little complex and needed more CSS stuff compared to general themes available freely.
The most important thing here is marking all the segments using guide lines and decide on where to slice the final design. If you go with guide lines, this will be very easy and accurate. Make sure that you put the line to the correct pixel. This is very important. Once this is done, you are ready to go with your design. It is a good practice if you use only the web colors if you use CSS background colors in your design. And make sure that you design with the category of the theme in mind.
In the next post I will explain you about the slicing the design and how to make the graphic web friendly and easy to load.

After some effort, I could manage to install my own Wordpress theme in my blog which you see now. Please let me know your comments on it. If you are interested of designing your own Wordpress theme, here’s a good news that I can tell you. I’m going to start a series of posts from today explaining very simply about how to design a Wordpress theme from the scratch. Before reading further, I recommend you to read the following post which I published few days ago. Click here to read that post.
To be honest, you must have a good knowledge in Photoshop, CSS and HTML, and a brief knowledge on PHP if you really want to design a Wordpress theme by yourself. The first thing you must do is drafting your design. Following are the main aspects that you must consider when drafting your design.
- How many sidebars you want.
- Does your theme need to have a fixed width (for screen resolution like 800X600 or 1024X768) or a floating width?
- What colors you plan to use.
- The heights and widths of the components of your theme. For an example, the header, footer, sidebar and any other custom component that you like to add.
- In which places that your components should appear.
- In which order that your components should appear.
- Do you need to add widgets to your sidebar?
- What are the pages that you require?
After considering the above mentioned factors, you must draw the template in a paper and clearly indicate every detail required to start the design. It must include all the widths and heights, colors, component placement etc. if your draft is complete and clear, your theme design will be easy and accurate. Remember the famous saying “A well begun is a half done”. I wish you all the very best in your Wordpress theme design first step. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. In the next post I will explain you about the theme design.
