Are you considering starting a home-based business so you can earn an income while staying home with your children? There are many wonderful opportunities and success stories associated with home-based businesses, but there are also many scams and fraudulent schemes out there, as well. Here is a short checklist of what you might want to think about before starting a home-based business.

Remember that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is! You would be shocked at how many smart individuals have fallen victim to scam artists. Watch out for business opportunities promising lots of money in a short time with little work.

One of the most common types of scams is the pyramid scheme business. Thankfully, these companies are illegal in many areas. The pyramid scheme encourages their members to recruit others to join the pyramid by paying money to the company. You do not actually make money by selling a product; you make money by recruiting. Since most people are only able to recruit so many others, only the people at the top of the pyramid actually see any real money. Sadly, the majority never make money from this type of business. Avoid the pyramid scheme at all cost!

Other popular home-based business scams are the stuffing envelopes or home assembly programs. Both of these schemes have been around for many years, yet they still rear their ugly head in legitimate sources like newspapers and magazines. Although some people may have actually been paid for stuffing envelopes, I have known people who tried to earn some money in this manner. They paid the required fee and followed the directions given, only to be told their work was not up to the companys standards.

Remember that if something sounds too amazing to be the truth, it is probably a scam. In most cases, you must send in money to pay for supplies, put the product together, and then send the assembled product to the company. The usual claim by the company is that the product was not put together correctly, so you will not be paid. Since they are the ones who judge the quality of the production, you have no say in the outcome and, ultimately, no recourse either.

Outlandish claims on a Home Based Business site claiming you will make thousands of dollars in a short time period working from home are sure signs of a scam. Can this be reality? Unfortunately, it just isnt possible. It is possible to make money with a home based business due to a large internet audience, but you must heavily research these possibilities before jumping headfirst into a scam.

Many businesses, like Internet Marketing, are genuine and valid. I have had some success with such businesses. Regrettably, the majority of these internet sites are specifically designed to take your money. These companies hire capable, talented copy-writers to produce convincing advertisements. These individuals know exactly what words and pictures to use to persuade you that their company will make you thousands of dollars

One question to ask when considering a home based business is: can the company provide proof of their claims? The ad sounds great, albeit unclear, but the money you will make is fabulous! Read everything, including the fine print, and you will probably find a run of the mill scam. Investigate the company well. You can make money from a home based business, but finding a legitimate one is like finding a needle in a haystack.

For the average individual, the prospect of working out of your own home and earning a few extra bucks - or making a career out of staying in your private domain and doing some sort of work from your home office - is a tantalizing offer. Many people have sought out these types of opportunities, and many entrepreneurs with good business ideas have managed to earn a living staying at home and working on a weekly basis. However, there is also a huge number of scams found on the Internet that are intended only to bilk money from people who want to stay home and make a few bucks.

Many home business scams exist to try to lure unsuspecting people who want to have some sort of legitimate work at home business into buying into a system or purchasing kits and other materials from them with the promise of income that reaches no ceiling and free time to relax instead of earning a living. In reality, these scams are solely aimed at helping someone else earn an easy living at your expense, and can ultimately lead a person to end up losing more than they would ever make using these services.

One of the first scams of this type made people send envelopes containing fliers on behalf of someone else. That someone in this way gains customers and leaves the unsuspecting middle men out of the monetary loop. The reward which is sometimes a dollar an envelope never reaches the home businessmen.

Many people are these days lured into scams by promising them that buying so and so accounting or billing software will get them outsourced work from establishments like hospitals. The scammers even give out list of prospective clients for a fee.

The thing that people need to know that buying these software which cost hundreds of dollars, will get them no work. Firstly, you need to have a license and training for medical coding and billing. And also medical outfits dont give this work to lone individuals.

A third scam involving work from home businesses is the promise of work at home building of kits or other crafts that can then be resold by the business with the promise of you being paid for every kit assembled. While this seems like a little more work than is expected, this scam is also one that baits you into purchasing something with no hopes of recovering your money. Most outfits will reject your assembled kits as inferior no matter the quality of assembly, which means you won’t be paid and your money to purchase the kits is down the drain, not to mention all the time you put into the assembly.

Data entry scams are currently the most popular and growing home business scams. Sitting at home filling out forms and spreadsheets in hope of earning money but ending up having wasted time is one of the most common results of such a venture. Though there are genuine data entry firms but such are hard to find. Also your work is often rejected citing poor quality and you receive no money.

So, there is no easy money. Whether it is the comfort of home or in an office hard work is always the requisite for earning money. So, for the wannabe home home business man you have to do your own research to see which are legitimate.
